Individual Therapy

We pay close attention to every detail, exploring with you and learning as we go. We believe in therapy being a two-part process, in which our clinicians are active participants.

About

We recognize the decision to seek therapy is not always an easy one. It can be painful to look inward when you have learned to find other ways to cope much of your life. The idea of opening up to a stranger may feel daunting, and lead to questions about what to do once you start. At Thalassa Psychological Services, we try to take our time and focus on the details,  getting to know you and your needs and figuring out how to best help you. We believe your feeling safe and heard is important, and a strong connection with your therapist is paramount. If you got to this point, know we take your inquiry seriously and respond within 1-2 business days. After your initial contact, we will schedule a free 15 minute phone call to discuss what brings you to therapy and what you’re looking for. We will then introduce you to the therapist that will best fit your needs.

Couples Therapy

Couples seek therapy for a variety of reasons including chronic conflict, infertility struggles, difficulty with intimacy and connection, disagreement regarding parenting practices.

About

Our approach to couples therapy is two-fold: Help each partner understand and express their real feelings, even those they may unconsciously hide from themselves and their significant other (for example, fears of rejection that may be masked by hostility or irritability). At the same time, we work to build each partner’s capacity to receive the other’s candid emotional communications with curiosity and loving support rather than defensiveness. Along the way, we explore how each partner’s attachment history may impact effective communication, and work to create opportunities for the couple to practice alternative ways of speaking and listening within a safe and structured environment. The results of this process often include not just a reduction in conflict and acrimony, but an increased sense of connection and intimacy.

Consultations

Your first scheduled visit is considered a consultation, and generally lasts between 45 and 60 minutes. The consultation phase can extend up to 2 or 3 sessions, after which your therapist will provide diagnostic feedback and treatment recommendations. We will discuss your concerns and goals of treatment and discuss an agreed upon way to work together. Treatment recommendations may include beginning treatment with us, or referral to another provider or program that may better address the needs that have been identified, should our way of working not appear to be the best match for any reason.

How We Work

Therapy sessions are scheduled at a mutually agreeable time, usually on a weekly basis, and typically last 45 minutes. We can discuss meeting more or less often and for longer sessions as needed. We generally do not work with prescribed timeframes for psychotherapy, but rather continually assess and openly discuss your changing needs and goals. Thus, psychotherapy proceeds for some on a short-term basis over a period of weeks, and it proceeds on a long-term basis over a period of years for others.

Teletherapy and Health

During the past few years, many psychotherapy practices have fully transitioned to working remotely. Although all our clinicians offer HIPAA compliant virtual therapy, we find meeting in person can be invaluable, especially for children and adolescents and offer in person sessions out of both our Manhattan and Westchester locations.
