Child & Adolescent Therapy
Therapy can play a strong role in a child or adolescent’s healthy development. Sometimes parents need additional support to help their children cope with changes in the world, at home, or within themselves. It can be unbearable to watch your child struggle and feel powerless to help. You don’t have to do it alone.
About
We acknowledge that you are the expert when it comes to your children, your family, your culture and community. We bring an expertise in working with children going through a variety of changes including separation/divorce, bereavement, chronic illness, school problems, bullying, and parenting struggles. We take our time to get to know your child, to understand their symptoms, and to clarify your family’s needs. In some instances we can work with parents of young children primarily through parent support sessions. Reaching out to initiate a conversation is the first step, the rest we can figure out together.

We help children improve emotional, behavioral, and cognitive functioning. We work collaboratively with your child, parents/caregivers, schools, and adjunctive providers to tailor a treatment that will best meet your child’s needs. We incorporate art and play therapy into the treatment, which can be particularly useful with younger children, as art and play are a child’s natural way of communicating and expressing his or her feelings. As children mature, they become more capable of exploring and confronting issues through dialog and cognitive work, which we also integrate into the therapeutic process. Play and creativity are extremely helpful in allowing children of all ages to access their emotions in a non-intrusive way. Adolescents sometimes are drawn to creative writing or art-making as a way to better understand themselves.

Consultation & Treatment
There is not a one-size-fits-all formula to determine the best course of treatment. We strive to create a safe therapeutic space for your child, while also helping you feel connected and engaged with the treatment. The therapeutic process begins with an initial consultation, divided between meeting with the child and parents, to explore the particular issues your child is dealing with. In speaking with the parent(s), we will discuss and determine the best way to help your child feel most comfortable engaging with treatment. We then provide general feedback and discuss treatment recommendations. Family therapy sessions or family support sessions with the parents can also be a useful tool that sometimes fit in well with treatment. For children and adolescents, we typically meet the child/patient between 1-3 times and once with the guardian/parent(s) following these meetings, along with the child if possible, to provide general feedback and discuss treatment recommendations.
